Brassinosteroids and Future of Crop Plants Under Changing Environments

A number of climate models indicate that crop productivity will drop dramatically as a result of global climate change, endangering the food security of an expanding population. It is anticipated that the arid and semi-arid regions would experience a rise in desertification as a result of climate change and shifting rainfall patterns, which will reduce the amount of land that is ploughed. Increased frequency and severity of abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, heat, and heavy metals, are sign of climate change and are expected to severely reduce the yield of staple crops. In certain nations, the commercialization of plant growth regulators (PGRs) has occurred with the aim of increasing crop productivity. These PGRs are crucial for controlling a plant’s growth and development because they cause morphological, physiological, and molecular changes in response to stress. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are important plant hormones, which play important role in plant growth and development. These BRs provides protection for the crops from abiotic stresses as well as increases the crop productivity in a sustainable way. BRs have potential to take forward the agriculture and food processing sector. Hence, the present chapter will focus on the future prospects of the crop plants in the presence of BRs.
