In natural and agricultural ecosystems, microbial communities play a pivotal role in shaping the health and productivity of plants in natural and agricultural ecosystems. This review article delves into the intricate relationship between plants and their associated microbiota, focusing on the co-shaping and co-evolution of microbial biodiversity. The mechanisms through which plants and microbes interact are examined, exploring the underlying principles governing the selection and maintenance of plant growth promoting microbes (PGPMs). The review also provides insights into the dynamic nature of these associations, discussing the tools and techniques employed in the identification and characterization of PGPMs. Additionally, emphasis has been provided on the significance of these beneficial microorganisms in sustainable agriculture, highlighting their potential to enhance productivity, mitigate abiotic and biotic stresses, and reduce the reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leading to a more sustainable approach. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners seeking to harness the potential of PGPMs to foster plant growth and improve agricultural sustainability.
