Herpes simplex, an acute infectious disease, is probably the most common viral disease affecting man, with the exception of viral respiratory infections. HSV is a DNA virus and a member of the human herpesvirus (HHV) family, officially known as Herpetoviridae. Two types of HSVs are known to exist: type 1 (HSV-1 or HHV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2 or HHV-2).
