Central Giant Cell Granuloma

The giant cell granuloma is considered widely to be a neoplastic lesion. Although formerly designated as “giant cell reparative granuloma,” Jaffe gave the term, there is little evidence that the lesion represents reparative response. This entity has various clinical behaviors. Some lesions demonstrate aggressive behavior similar to that of a neoplasm, while others have simple reactive behavior. Most oral and maxillofacial pathologists have dropped the term “reparative.” Today these lesions are designated as giant cell granuloma. The World Health Organization defines central giant cell granuloma as an intraosseous lesion consisting of cellular fibrous tissue that contains multiple foci of hemorrhage, aggregations of multinucleated giant cells, and occasionally trabeculae of bone.
