Dr Vincent Backhaus argues persuasively and eloquently that being an Indigenous ECR has a particularity not shared with all ECRs, given that Indigenous teaching and research are so intimately intertwined with who we are as Indigenous people and the histories and contemporary experiences of our peoples. Dr Backhaus reminds us that Indigenous ECRs act with agency and are often pioneers in their fields, forging fresh pathways into the academy, accompanied by uncertainty and the risk of constantly making mistakes. Also considered are issues of identity, not just Indigeneity but developing emerging professional identities, as well. Dr Backhaus recognises the privilege but also the significant responsibility of being an Indigenous ECR, benefitting from opportunities unknown to our forebears.
