Emergence of Specific Psychopathologies Following Abuse and Neglect

The genetic influence on major depression is about 37% when considering the whole population but can rise to over 70% for individuals. Environmental factors in general account for over 60% of depression. Depressive rumination is correlated with environmental factors and only mildly heritable. Depression itself is highly correlated with suicidality and PTSD with suicide attempts. Epigenetics, genetics, and environmental factors all act in concert to determine the likelihood of developing PTSD and its clinical phenotypes. PTSD is a very good predictor of suicide attempts. Impulsivity and aggression are about 50% inherited. Suicidality and suicide among adolescents are highly correlated with major depression (MDD), especially in females. Anxiety as well as depression must be considered a principal risk factor for suicidality. The quantitative relations between the psychopathologies discussed above with respect to suicide risk are summarised.
