Materials Modifications by Radiation Technology

摘要

Radiation technology has become an integral milestone in the field of material modifications to cater various societal requisites. Radiation amended items are applicable in almost all dimensions of our daily life including power, food, agriculture, medical, transportation, communication, security, environment and research. Radiation acts as a source of energy to conclude a requisite process. It creates active species in the material by imparting energy which normally leads to a chain reaction. Thus, the desired modification can be realized with the investment of small energy. Radiation treatments are applied as an advanced oxidation process (AOP) to serve the purpose of change in the material chemistry. The radiant energy is applied to control, mutate, sterilize and heal the cells of living beings to achieve the respective beneficial goals in the field of seed mutation, medical treatment and preservation of food items. The radiation processing is carried out in the final format of the product. Additionally, the unique aspect of radiation treatment is its conclusion in atmospheric conditions normally and that makes it very attractive over the conventional alternative approaches. Present chapter deals with the beneficial application of radiation technology especially non-power applications to uplift the material characteristics belonging to distinct domains.
