Socio-economic Implications of Radiation Protection Policies

This chapter explores the effect of radiation protection policies, specifically in the field of nuclear power, medicine, and emergency management, emphasizing their socio-economic impact. While prioritizing public safety, these policies are one of the key factors that pose challenges to the economic viability of nuclear power projects. Rigorous evaluation processes and adherence to safety protocols increase upfront costs, potentially affecting competitiveness against alternative energy sources. In nuclear medicine, compliance necessitates significant investments, straining healthcare resources and affecting operational efficiency. Radiation emergency management, focusing on protective measures, introduces socio-economic implications such as evacuation costs and financial burdens associated with remediation. Despite these challenges, this chapter identifies areas for optimism. It proposes a comprehensive re-evaluation of existing policies through cost–benefit analysis and multi-criteria decision-making. This approach aims to explore alternative, less restrictive approaches while upholding safety standards. Any such revision would need careful consideration of complexities and stakeholder perspectives, offering a potential pathway to strike a balance between safety and economic viability.
