Drugs Used for Immunomodulation

Immunomodulators are substances that can modify the body’s immune response. The human immune system comprises a variety of components, including organs, white blood cells (WBCs), proteins, and other chemical elements that serve to safeguard the body from the threats posed by diseased cells and toxins. When the immune system is compromised, individuals may require immunomodulators to enhance its effectiveness. The immune system consists of both cellular and humoral components. Cellular components encompass macrophages, dendritic cells, NK cells, T-cells, and B-cells, while humoral components include antibodies and cytokines. One critical function of the immune system is to prevent the development of cancer by eliminating or suppressing oncogenic viral infections. Immunomodulators can alter the inflammatory environment, which plays a significant role in tumor formation. Additionally, the immune system conducts immune surveillance, identifying and eliminating transformed cells before they can inflict harm on the body.
