Application of Microwaves in Development of Metal Matrix Composites

Need for tailor made properties of materials desired for corresponding applications has increased demand in development of composite materials. Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) is renowned among all the composites and finds wide range of applications in everyday applications, owing to higher functional temperatures, strength, stiffness, radiation resistance, etc. Hence, developing metal matrix composites in an energy-efficient and environmentally greener route becomes prime responsibility. In this regard, the present work is a successful attempt made to develop an Al–5%SiC metal matrix composite by microwave stir casting technique. The process involves melting of the commercially available bulk pure aluminum by microwave hybrid heating, further addition of reinforcement particles, and further stirring the mixture of aluminum and silicon carbide to obtain a homogeneous distribution of the reinforcements. The developed metal matrix composite is characterized for the phases, microstructure, tensile properties and hardness.
