Literature Review

The United Nations Conference on Habitat III, emphasizes the Multi-Participation for future urban sustainable development. Effective public participation, engaging the diversity of stakeholders during the implementation of urban renewal, is a vital to navigate and address the intricate issue of stakeholder interests. Therefore, this chapter critically reviews and examines the literature related to public participation in urban renewal spanning the past two decades. In Sects. 2.1–2.3 we offer an overview of the research by the analysis of the Citespace. In Sects. 2.4 we reviewed several factors influencing participation effectiveness, encompassing types of participation, stakeholders, definitions and standards of high-quality public participation, participation processes, influencing factors, and evaluation methods. Sections 2.5 conducts an discussion about limitations of three key points, i.e., the types and characteristics of public participation in urban renewal, the involvement of stakeholders in public participation, and the assessment of public participation quality. Finally, Sects. 2.6 is the conclusion of this chapter, as the theoretical foundation for the research, it provides recommendations for future research in this field.
