Developing Teacher’s Capacity to Implement Interdisciplinary STEM Tasks Specifically Targeted to Responsible Citizenship Education

The world is facing severe global challengesGlobal challenges such as climate changeClimate change, food security, rising migration, social justiceSocial justice, or Pandemic. In these times, citizenship educationCitizenship education seems more important than ever. How can this citizenship educationCitizenship education relate to mathematics and science learning? In this paper we present an interdisciplinary international design researchDesign research study MaSDIV in which we developed teaching and professional developmentProfessional development materials connecting mathematics and science education to citizenship educationCitizenship education. We will present interdisciplinary classroom materialsClassroom materials from STEM educationSTEM education that serve the purpose of citizenship educationCitizenship education as well as the principal design features of a related PD. The evaluation resultsEvaluation results of the accompanying evaluation of this PD course, which was implemented by partners in six countries to support teachers in connecting mathematics and science education with citizenship educationCitizenship education were promising. For example, our results show that in general, most participating teachers reported a high overall satisfaction with the course. They also indicate that teachers’ self-efficacyTeacher self-efficacy beliefs about using realistic contextsContexts relevant to society, their learning-related beliefs about the benefits of using such contextsContexts as well as their own teaching practice changed significantly after participating in the MaSDiV PD course.
