Assessment of Flood Vulnerability in Vedganga River Basin Spread Over Maharashtra–Karnataka States in India Using Geospatial Techniques

The recurring issue of floods during every monsoon season faced by the residents of the Vedganga river region was investigated using advanced techniques such as morphometric parameter analysis and soil conservation service curve number (SCS-CN) methods. In this region, the average rainfall from 2000 to 2018 is 1980.1 mm/year. The study aimed to determine the flood susceptibility of 46 watersheds (V01–V46) in the western ghats region. The analysis revealed that certain watersheds, specifically V01–V13 and V36–V46, had more surface runoff compared to others due to factors such as soil type, land cover pattern, and slope percentage. The findings showed that areas with steep slopes were more prone to flooding. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the flood scenario, examined the catchment areas and drainage patterns of the basins. Remote sensing techniques were used to identify the land cover pattern, and topographic maps were used to calculate the slope percentage of the watersheds. The results of the study can be utilized to develop effective strategies to mitigate the flood situation in the region. For instance, the findings can be used to develop soil conservation measures, forestation, and watershed management practices. The study’s outcomes also highlight the importance of using advanced techniques such as morphometric analysis and curve number as an effective approach to understanding flood scenarios in the western ghats. The study provides valuable insights into flood management in the area and can be utilized to develop strategies to mitigate the flood situation in the region.
