Assessment of the Jiadhal River Channel Shifting and Its Impact on the Land Use Land Cover

River channel shifting mainly occurs due to the river bank erosion and the deposition process. River channel shifting is widespread in floodplain areas, mainly in the alluvial plain. The alluvial river frequently changes its channel to maintain the equilibrium condition of the river morphology, such as the transportation of water and sediment flow from upstream towards the downstream of the river basin. It negatively impacts public and private properties and infrastructure, causes loss of life, and changes a river basin’s land use pattern and morphology. The Jiadhal River is well known for its frequent floods and shifting river course in Assam’s northern part of the Brahmaputra plain. The river originates from Arunachal Pradesh and flows through Assam’s Dhemaji district. In the present study, the survey of India Toposheet (SOI) and LANDSAT data were used through geospatial techniques to identify the spatiotemporal dynamics of the Jiadhal River channel and the dynamic pattern of land use land cover from 1973 to 2022. From the study, a remarkable channel shift has been determined in the Jiadhal drainage basin, which significantly impacts the land use pattern of the drainage basin and affects the livelihood of the local people. Therefore, monitoring and detecting river course changes are essential for implementing management and mitigation measures in the region.
