The path from the creation of the universe, through to the early development of civilizations that eventually led to today’s conception of a world, historically passed to the Mediterranean region. Before considering the many city-states that developed there, a brief description of how the Mediterranean Sea and its surrounding geography formed is appropriate. This discussion connects Earth’s tectonic progression to the topography that permitted communities to thrive around the Mediterranean basin.
