Tao Menghe and Social Surveys in China

Tao Menghe (1887–1960), born Tao Lügong and courtesy name Yixing, was born in Tianjin, Hebei. In 1904, he enrolled in Jingye Middle School, which was later renamed the Nankai School, and in 1906, he graduated from the school’s first teacher’s training program. Due to his outstanding results, he was able to travel to the Tokyo Higher Normal School to study history and geography that same year.
