Formative Years

This chapter describes Majola’s childhood and recounts, along with happy family memories, early violent episodes in their Gugulethu community; these experiences prompted Majola’s interest in community building and collective action and gave him deep insight into the complexities of a community’s dynamic relationships. The chapter focuses particularly on the influences of his early mentors in athletics, revolutionary politics, and the black consciousness movement.
