Role of Artificial Intelligence in Clinical and Hospital Pharmacy

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as an influential force in various industries, with potentially revolutionary implications for healthcare. With its ability to deal with massive volumes of data, recognize patterns, and anticipate outcomes, AI technologies have opened up possibilities for diagnostics, treatment planning, patient monitoring, and drug discovery. Furthermore, AI is emerging in clinical and hospital pharmacy. Integrating AI in various aspects of clinical pharmacy practice, such as pharmacogenomics, translation sciences, pharmacometrics, pharmacovigilance, drug stewardship programs, medication safety, and polypharmacy, has proven beneficial in improving patient care and treatment outcomes. In addition, AI has a significant role in improving patient care, assuring patient safety, improving medication management processes, and optimizing inventory in hospital pharmacies. AI is potentially known to reduce medication errors and risks and optimize disease management with advanced integrated systems. Significant advancements in AI have been observed within hospital pharmacy settings, particularly in key domains such as pharmacy supply chain management, Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE), Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS), automated dispensing systems, and the identification of medication errors. AI in clinical and hospital pharmacies has great potential to revolutionize how medications are prescribed, dispensed, administered, and monitored. However, since AI systems use massive amounts of patient data, privacy, and cybersecurity are major concerns. Hence, healthcare organizations must implement stringent security measures and adhere to strict privacy regulations to safeguard patient data and maintain trust in AI-driven healthcare solutions.
