Suicidal Behavior in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country located in South Asia with an impressive economic growth. There is a burden of both communicable and non-communicable diseases in the country. Mental health and suicide prevention are largely neglected in the country. This chapter discusses the epidemiology (rate, sociodemographic distributions, and risk factors) of suicidal behavior (ideation, plan, attempt, and suicide), its legal status highlighting the process of suicide declaration, sources of suicide related data, suicide literacy and stigma related factors, status of media (newspaper- online and printed; movie and drama) reporting of suicidal behavior, current prevention steps, and existing opportunities and challenges for suicide prevention in Bangladesh.
