Suicidal Behavior in Afghanistan
摘要
Suicidal behavior is a major public health problem in Afghanistan. Evidence indicates a high prevalence of factors associated with suicidal behaviors including mental health problems, domestic violence, poverty, conflicts, and political and economic instability in Afghanistan. However, suicidal behaviors are still underreported in the country. Underreporting of suicide and self-harm behaviors might be associated with a high level of stigma in the conservative Afghan society. Additionally, the unavailability of a formal surveillance and registration system for suicidal behaviors might be indicative of the weak political commitment. Seeking an end to the conflict, improving political stability, and working for economic prosperity are considered long-term solutions for the prevention and management of mental health problems and ultimately suicidal behaviors in Afghanistan. Besides, there is an urgent need for assessment of suicidal behaviors via a nationally representative survey, establishment of a nationwide surveillance system for suicidal behaviors, development of a comprehensive suicide prevention strategy, raising public awareness, training of healthcare workers, and proper diagnosis and management of mental health problems in Afghanistan.
