Extracellular Vesicles in Viral Infection

The scientific community is becoming increasingly interested in extracellular vesicles (EVs) because of their function in intercellular communication. It has long been known that during apoptosis, cells release vesicles into the extracellular environment. It has only lately been recognized, nevertheless, that healthy cells also release vesicles into the extracellular milieu. These vesicles, which are produced by healthy cells, go by a variety of names: ectosomes, microparticles, and shedding microvesicles are just a few. Exosomes and microvesicles are recognized for their ability to promote intercellular communication between nearby and distant cells. Immune cells secrete exosomes, which can function as antigen-presenting vesicles, boost anticancer immune responses, or produce tolerogenic effects to reduce inflammation. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that tumor cells use EVs to further their development by stimulating the generation of regulatory T lymphocytes to thwart immune responses and deactivating T lymphocytes or natural killer cells. EVs have been suggested to have a role in viral infections apart from myelin development, neurite outgrowth, and neuronal survival within the nervous system. It has been discovered that EVs move across a variety of bodily fluids, such as blood and urine. Because the makeup of circulating EVs is similar to that of the parent cell, there has been a lot of interest in using EVs as a source for biomarker discovery especially for different viral infections. The biogenesis, immunological functions and their therapeutic use for viral diseases are discussed.
