Extracellular Vesicles and Bacterial Infection

Most of the living organisms secrete extracellular vesicles or outer membrane vesicles or membrane vesicles for cellular and molecular mechanisms of cell communication during infection. Studies conducted so far with various bacterial infection models demonstrate the release of various types of vesicles that include exosomes and microvesicles. Depending upon the infection and nature of cell type, vesicle composition changes and ultimately might impact the host immune response and bacterial growth. The mechanisms behind the vesicle release, composition, and impact on the immune system have not been fully explored. Future research needs to include in vivo and ex vivo models to understand the significance of vesicles in host immune response during bacterial infection. This would help us in formulation of vesicles based therapeutics and prophylactic indicators of different infectious diseases in the near future.
