Ankylosed Hip Joint

Ankylosed hip joints are painless despite the loss of hip mobility. Therefore, hip pain is not an indication for THA. In ankylosed hip joints, THA is indicated for low back pain, ipsilateral knee pain, and contralateral hip pain caused by the ankylosing hip. In other words, the most common indication for THA of the ankylosed hip joint is adjacent joint dysfunction. Coxitis knee [1] and hip-spine syndrome [2] are well-known adjacent joint disorders of the ankylosed hip (Fig. 75.1). THA or TKA (total knee arthroplasty) for ipsilateral knee pain or contralateral hip pain caused by an ankylosed hip joint should be performed with caution. TKA of the ipsilateral knee joint or THA of the contralateral hip joint may cause implant failure due to the unusual load applied. Therefore, THA of the ankylosed hip joint is prioritized for adjacent joint disorders of the ankylosed hip joint.
