Portable Navigation

In total hip arthroplasty (THA), following the preoperative plan for placement of the implant in the proper place and at the proper angle is an important because it reduces post-THA dislocation and polyethylene wear and improves range of motion, thus, resulting in a good long-term postoperative outcome [1–3]. So-called robotic (such as Mako) and navigation systems (CT-based navigation and image-free navigation) can enable very precise implant placement (placement angle and position) [4], but they are very expensive. Additionally, they are not available to all surgeons and institutions because they require additional time for preoperative planning and intraoperative work and personnel skilled in navigation work. Therefore, portable navigation has recently become popular as a simple, relatively inexpensive, and highly accurate tool for acetabular component placement.
