Preoperative Planning

Preoperative planning is essential for a successful total hip arthroplasty (THA). Preoperative planning includes appreciating the proximal femur geometry that varies in patients, selecting the appropriate acetabular and femoral components, determining the component size and positioning, estimating the postoperative leg length and global offset. The general goal of preoperative planning includes placing the cup in the native hip center as much as possible and restoring the femoral offset and leg length discrepancy. Three-dimensional templating allows visualisation of the three-dimensional bony contact of the acetabular cup, selection of the femoral stem taking into account the femoral version and the proximal femoral shape, and accurate prediction of postoperative global offset and impingement.
