Metal-on-Metal THA

The evolution of metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) is marked by significant milestones and challenges. Philip Wiles performed the first THA in 1938 using stainless steel implants. Subsequent advancements included George K. McKee’s introduction of cobalt-chromium alloy in the 1940s, leading to the development of the McKee-Farrar prosthesis, which showed mixed results over time due to issues like implant loosening. In the late 1980s, Bernhard G. Weber developed the second-generation MoM THA with improved wear resistance. The popularity of MoM THA with large-diameter femoral heads grew in the early 2000s due to reduced wear and dislocation rates. However, concerns over adverse reactions to metal debris (ARMD) and trunnionosis led to the discontinuation of MoM THA by 2015. Future advancements in MoM THA will require careful monitoring and long-term follow-up to ensure patient safety and implant success.
