Online Automatic Tuning of Fractional Order PID Controller Using Progressive Estimation Technique

In this work, a new fractional numerical method for an online automatically tuned fractional order proportional integral derivative controller has been suggested for real-time implementation. A new tuning algorithm based on the progressive estimation technique is investigated and proposed for the auto-tuning of fractional order controller. Calculation of fractional derivative and integral is implemented using the numerical fractional method. The performance of the controller was checked with the three sets of experiments for three different practical conditions. The effect of sampling time and set point on the controller parameters has been observed. Online tuned controller shows optimum performance without having the details of the plant under control. This method does not need the mathematical model of the plant and also the step response output of the system under control. The proposed controller is robust in nature and has a small tuning time. Real-time experimental results have illustrated the optimum performance of the controller.
