Integration of Traceability and Blockchain Within the Supply Chain of Manufacturing Industry from a Sustainability Perspective

In the industrial sector, traceability plays a significant role and is crucial to supply chain optimization. Data may be gathered and analyzed throughout the production process by using traceability. A higher level of information tracking within an organization has advantages for the economy, environment, and society. It results in the reduction of corporate waste with transparency in the supply chain leading to an increase in the quality of the product. This chapter investigates blockchain technology through a literature study for traceability focusing on three dimensions of sustainability: ecological sustainability, economic sustainability, and social sustainability. The results reached about blockchain technology’s use in traceability are that the technology is a valuable tool for developing sustainable supply chains. The technology ensures supply chain transparency as well as security. It is challenging to manage the integration of blockchain throughout the supply chain due to the technology’s infancy.
