An Analysis of MAC Layer Protocols for Performance and Efficiency

Trust management within the medium access control layer is vital for frame transmission. It could be achieved when high reliability in frame transmission will execute without collisions. To detect the issues of collision, CSMA/CD is implemented. The issue of heavy energy consumption causes nodes to decay quickly; hence, frames do not reach the destination causing reliability issues. This paper investigates the dual-layer MAC protocol that provides much better energy efficiency and reliability than sensor-based and low-power MAC protocols. The discussed protocol minimizes the energy consumption associated with nodes having low power. Secondary sources and document analysis are performed to examine and validate the work done within low-power mode energy-efficient MAC protocols. The simulation parameters considered MAC protocols for evaluating the discussed approach, which includes energy consumption and reliability in terms of transmission and receiving of frames. The results of three different protocols suggested that the low-power node MAC protocol performs well in terms of reliability and energy consumption, and still, there is room for improvement in terms of execution time.
