Enhancing Food Safety and Quality Through Sustainable Food Production and Consumption Practices in the Global South

Ensuring food safety and quality is a key challenge facing the world today. This challenge is particularly pronounced in countries within the Global South like Nigeria, Pakistan, and Brazil among others, where majority of people live in poverty and have limited access to safe and quality food. The inadequate institutional frameworks, limited food safety infrastructure, and limited resources for effective food safety management systems are major contributors to this problem. Sustainable food production and consumption practices have the potential to address these challenges by integrating food safety and quality considerations into production and consumption systems. This chapter examines the consequences, challenges, and sustainable practices for enhancing food safety and quality in the Global South. The consequences of poor food safety and quality on health, the economy, and the environment such as foodborne illnesses, economic destabilization, morbidity, and high mortality rate are also highlighted. With focus on the Global South, food safety and quality challenges including inadequate food safety regulatory system, inadequate government financing, bad infrastructure, limited access to clean water and sanitation, and inadequate food processing and storage facilities are critically discussed. The chapter also provides examples of successful sustainable food production and consumption practices that have or can be been implemented in the Global South, including consumer awareness, plant-based diet, good manufacturing practices, organic farming, renewable energy, as well as the adoption of capacity building and training that promote soil health, minimize the use of chemical inputs, and protect biodiversity. These practices promote the production of high-quality, safe, and nutritious food, and may help to reduce economic meltdown and the prevalence of foodborne illnesses. However, successful implementation of these practices requires the collaboration of stakeholders at all levels, including policymakers, farmers, consumers, and civil society organizations. This chapter therefore calls on all stakeholders to work together toward sustainable food systems that prioritize food safety and quality while promoting social, economic, and environmental sustainability in the Global South.
