Challenges Associated with the Nutritional Status of Traditional and Indigenous Foods in the Global South
摘要
In this chapter, we aim to explore the nutritional value of traditional and indigenous foods in the Global South and the challenges associated with their usage. Studies have shown that traditional and indigenous foods are powerful sources of nutrients and also improve health status. They are an inexpensive source of a balanced diet. Although some may argue otherwise, indigenous communities, particularly in developing nations, have experienced a significant decline in the consumption of their traditional foods. This can be attributed to a multitude of factors, such as changing food preferences and safety measures, increased poverty rates, unfavorable environmental conditions, shifts in climate patterns, limited access to present industrial and commercial markets, and inadequate investment in research and development in the Global South. Indigenous crops have generally been neglected, making them less competitive and gradually losing their value and local knowledge. Due to the high rate of food insecurity within the Global South, traditional food requires investigation to identify food safety. There is a need for a joint effort by policymakers to tackle and provide lasting solutions to these problems facing food insecurity in the Global South.
