Food Crop Utilization and Conservation Techniques in the Global South
摘要
Crop utilization and preservation patterns vary widely across regions and communities, reflecting the rich diversity of cultures and environments in the Global South. Additionally, the ongoing processes of globalization and urbanization have significantly influenced contemporary dietary patterns, leading to changes in traditional food crop utilization over time. Efforts to promote sustainable and culturally sensitive agricultural practices are essential for preserving traditional food systems and promoting food security in the face of evolving challenges. Traditional crop utilization patterns in the Global South are often shaped by local agricultural practices, cultural preferences, and ecological conditions. The Global South, comprising regions in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Oceania, has a rich diversity of crops and agricultural systems. Traditional food crop utilization and conservation methods have existed among locals before the introduction of modern methods and many of these traditional methods subsist to date. The aims of this chapter is to examine the utilization and preservation patterns of food crops in regions of the Global South, including traditional and modern methods of food preparation and consumption. This chapter also explores the challenges and opportunities associated with food crop utilization in the Global South, including issues related to nutrition, food security, and cultural practices and discusses conservation techniques aimed at preserving food crop diversity and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices in the Global South. This chapter contributes towards highlighting the importance of traditional knowledge and indigenous agricultural practices in the utilization and conservation of food crops. It also recommends strategies for enhancing food crop utilization and conservation efforts in the Global South, including the promotion of agroecological approaches and the integration of traditional and modern farming methods. Overall, this chapter aims to provide insights into the role of food crop utilization and conservation in promoting food security, biodiversity, and sustainable development in the Global South.
