Food Security Complexities in the Global South

The majority of countries and regions within the Global South deal with significant and growing challenges militating the attainment of food security. Food insecurity in the Global South has a feedback loop that is linked intricately to poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, population growth, urbanization, and many others. This chapter focuses on the subtle complexities of food security in the Global South and emphasizes the interdependence of key factors and players. Poverty has emerged as a substantial barrier, limiting purchasing power and hindering access to nutrient-rich diets, with disparities in resource distribution disproportionately affecting women and marginalized communities. Climate change, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, impacts agricultural productivity, further complicating the situation. Initiatives like community-based food distribution and sustainable agriculture in Brazil and India showcase robust approaches resilient to climate change. Examining the critical elements of food security, viz., availability, access, utilization, and stability, this chapter draws real-world examples, including Kenya’s sustainable agriculture and Brazil’s social protection programs. Nigeria serves as an example of the Global South’s challenges, facing low agricultural productivity, restricted access due to poverty, and unstable political environments impacting food supply. Malnutrition is exacerbated by conflicts and natural disasters, reducing dietary diversity and knowledge. Various factors, such as diseases, inadequate storage, conflicts, climate change, and poverty-driven migration, contribute to food insecurity. The consequences of this food insecurity include increased crime rates, health issues, and political instability. Mitigation strategies involve population control, infrastructure development, consistent policy frameworks, trade facilitation, and educational initiatives.
