The Category of Grey in Management Science Research

The chapter explores the application of grey systems theory in the context of management science, in particular its role in modelling uncertainty in quantitative research. The chapter highlights the challenges of quantifying complex management systems and how grey systems theory offers a structured methodology to address these issues. It critically analyses the compatibility of grey systems theory with existing research paradigms in the management sciences, confirming its relevance despite different methodologies. In addition, the chapter explores the axiomatic foundations of grey systems theory, proposing criteria for its application in the management sciences to clearly distinguish it from other approaches to modelling uncertainty. The contrast between the systems approach in management research and the grey systems theory approach is analysed, suggesting that their differences do not negatively affect the application of grey methods in the field. The usefulness of grey systems theory within the dominant neopositivist-functionalist-systems paradigm in management research is also discussed, highlighting its potential to increase realism and generalise research with low control variables. Through an analysis of quantification procedures, the chapter outlines the relationship between the limitations of quantification and the ability to identify and express grey information. Introduce grey space as an axiomatisation of grey systems theory, which helps to define its scope and utility in management research. The chapter concludes by outlining the significant theoretical and methodological contributions of grey systems theory to management sciences, paving the way for further research in subsequent chapters.
