Perceptions of Japan in the First Half of the Twentieth Century

Japan’s progress in defeating Russia and China in wars at the start of the twentieth century together with its successful expansion of its exports blotted out New Zealand’s preconceived notions of a people little removed from barbarism. Japan was perceived as a major threat to New Zealand’s security.
