摘要

Speculation on the future strength of China industrially or militarily became a frequent topic in debate in New Zealand in the first half of the twentieth century. Fear of excessive immigration from China remained a major concern. But perceptions remained of China being a country stuck in the past and changing the lives of the massive population would always be a massive challenge.
