Perceptions of China in the Nineteenth Century

The chapter demonstrates the information on which New Zealand formed its perception of China in the nineteenth century. That was obtained mainly from reports of British activities in trying to develop trade with China and the consequent hostilities. The perception was that China had been a major ancient civilisation but had become fossilised and inferior in comparison with Europeans.
