摘要

In the past few decades, “Climate Change” has emerged as one of the biggest concerns for scientists, ecologists, and environmentalists as well as for the common people. The main reason of changing climate is global warming. The increase of global temperature triggers different phenomenon like melting of glaciers and rise in sea level, increase in sea surface temperature and ocean acidification, loss of biodiversity and decreased ecosystem functioning. Population growth further adds to anthropogenic pollution and nutrient enrichment of habitats. These phenomena negatively affect both nature and the human population. The most affecting cause of global warming is the increase in Green House Gases. The Green House Gases increase mainly due to burning of fossil fuels. Over exploitation of fossil fuel have negative impacts on environment as well as on economy. Algae not only reduce atmospheric GHGs by capturing carbon di oxide, but also used to make green and sustainable energy products, which have the potential to replace fossil fuel and contribute towards carbon reduction. In this chapter, importance of algae as a potential tool for mitigation of climate change is discussed with an insight into their potentiality in contributing towards carbon sequestration and sustainable blue economy.
