Genetic Enhancement Strategies for Medicinal Plants: Exploring Mutagenesis

Mutagenesis, a powerful technique in plant breeding, holds significant promise for enhancing the genetic diversity and therapeutic potential of medicinal plants. Medicinal plants are valued for their secondary metabolites, which serve as sources for valuable drugs. However, challenges in cultivation, environmental changes, and limited genetic diversity hinder their potential. Induced mutagenesis emerges as a solution to address these challenges, offering targeted genetic alterations through physical and chemical agents. This chapter reviews mutagenesis approaches in medicinal plants, including random mutagenesis through irradiation and chemical treatments. It also delves into the evolving landscape of targeted mutagenesis, exemplified by the revolutionary CRISPR/Cas9 system. The success stories of mutagenesis in various medicinal plants, such as black henbane, opium poppy, and isabgol, demonstrate its potential to boost desired traits like alkaloid content and yield. Despite its promise, mutagenesis techniques have limitations, including off-target effects and regulatory considerations. As the demand for medicinal plants rises due to climate change and population growth, integrating traditional breeding practices with advanced mutagenesis tools offers a pathway to harness the full potential of these valuable resources.
