Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Secondary Metabolites in Medicinal Plants

摘要

The study of plant secondary metabolites has advanced throughout the previous few decades. Secondary metabolites are organic compounds produced by plants that are not directly involved in the primary metabolic processes of growth and development. Instead, these compounds often serve various ecological functions, such as defense against herbivores, attraction of pollinators, and competition with other plants. Many secondary metabolites have also been found to possess medicinal properties, making them valuable resources in traditional and modern system of medicine. Some of the well-studied secondary metabolites for their potential pharmacological activities and health benefits include alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics, glycosides saponins, anthocyanins, lignans, coumarins, etc. They have special applications as flavors, dyes, insecticides, and colorants, making them economically valuable. It is important to note that while many medicinal plants have shown promising effects in traditional medicine and early research. Further studies, including clinical trials, are often needed to establish their safety and efficacy for modern medicinal use. This chapter consists of an introductory overview of secondary metabolites, methods for screening analysis using modern chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, therapeutic applications, bioavailability and pharmacokinetics, synergistic combination and therapies, and safety and toxicity combinations.
