Medicinal plants, vital sources of therapeutic compounds, are subjected to various environmental stresses, including biotic factors that significantly influence their growth and bioactive compound production. Biotic stress, induced by pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and herbivores, poses a substantial threat to the sustainable cultivation of medicinal plants. The interaction between medicinal plants and pathogens triggers a cascade of molecular responses, including the activation of defense-related genes and synthesis of secondary metabolites. Pathogen-induced stress alters the biosynthesis pathways of bioactive compounds, impacting the quality and quantity of medicinal properties in these plants. Understanding the molecular basis of plant-pathogen interactions is crucial for developing effective mitigation strategies. Integrated pest management, genetic engineering for disease resistance, and the use of beneficial microorganisms are among the promising approaches to alleviate biotic stress on medicinal plants.
