Future Directions and Emerging Trends in Medicinal Plant DNA Barcoding

The analysis of genome sequences in various plant species has uncovered genes linked to different traits and their inheritance patterns. This exploration has facilitated the mapping of complex traits associated with diverse phenotypes. Recent discoveries demonstrate the utility of DNA barcoding in categorizing unknown specimens, authenticating phytomedicines, and conserving plant diversity. However, no individual common DNA barcode exists for entire plant sets, necessitating a relative examination of plant barcode loci to select the most appropriate candidates for authenticating specific medicinal plant families. Both chloroplast and nuclear regions are utilized as universal barcodes for verifying phytomedicines. Advancements in genomics, particularly next-generation sequencing, have enabled the complete sequencing of plastomes, termed super-barcodes, significantly enhancing traditional ethnobotanical knowledge and promoting safer usage of phytomedicines. The current focus is on using DNA barcoding to ensure the integrity and authenticity of herbal products, defending consumers from potential health hazards due to product replacement or adulteration. Developing a DNA database via next-generation sequencing, and prioritizing conserved regions, holds significant promise for precise identification of medicinal plants.
