Role of Genome-Based Barcoding in Quality Control and Standardization of Medicinal Plants
摘要
DNA barcoding has emerged as a potential tool in medicinal plant research, providing a robust and accurate method for species identification. Its application in the authentication and classification of medicinal plants addresses challenges associated with traditional methods like morphological identification. Utilizing specific DNA regions, such as barcode sequences from the chloroplast genome (e.g., rbcL, matK, and trnH-psbA) and nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS), facilitates discrimination among closely related species, enhancing the reliability of plant identification. The significance of DNA barcoding lies in its ability to overcome limitations associated with morphological variations, seasonal changes, and the presence of processed plant materials in medicinal products. DNA barcoding plays a crucial role in quality control within the herbal medicine industry, ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicinal plant products. This technique aids in detecting adulteration, contamination, or substitution, thereby safeguarding consumers and promoting regulatory compliance. Moreover, DNA barcoding contributes to biodiversity conservation by facilitating the identification of endangered or threatened medicinal plant species. As the global demand for medicinal plants continues to rise, the integration of DNA barcoding in both research and industry holds promise for advancing authenticity, traceability, and sustainability in the medicinal plant sector. This chapter underscores the transformative impact of DNA barcoding on medicinal plant science, providing a molecular foundation for precision in identification, quality assurance, and conservation efforts.
