Building the Edifice: Administrators-cum-Anthropologists in the Naga Hills

This period covers the third phase in the expansion of British administration, when a lot of anthropological literature was produced documenting the various facets of cultural life of the Nagas in detail. With a significant standing in the Naga hills, the nature of texts and attitudes therein also changed from the earlier format of cursory reports and surveys as they could afford a much deeper engagement with the people. In this chapter, we have focussed on the writings of some prominent administrators who also donned the hat of anthropologists.
