Molecular Alterations for the Enhancement of Natural Products in Plants

This chapter explores the exciting field of molecular modifications intended to improve plants’ natural product synthesis. The story opens with an introduction and explores the natural product biosynthesis pathway, giving readers a broad overview of its complexities. Then, different approaches to molecular modifications are explained, illustrating the ever-changing field of plant biotechnology progress. With an emphasis on RNA interferences and Agrobacterium-mediated transformations, genetic engineering is discussed as a potent tool for precise modifications. These techniques make it possible to modify gene expression in specific ways, which opens the door to increased natural product accumulation. Another important approach that comes to light is metabolic engineering, which emphasizes the modification of metabolic pathways to increase the synthesis of desired natural metabolites, especially with respect of alkaloid, terpenes, and phenol. This chapter concludes by highlighting the variety of strategies that are available for molecular changes in plants and highlighting the benefits of combining new technologies with established practices. The variety of approaches presented demonstrates the tangible possibility of releasing the entire range of metabolites unique to plants.
