Traditional Agronomic Practices: Understanding and Mitigating the Risks of Climate Change

Humanity is currently dealing with a slew of fundamental issues all over the world. These include climate change, economic turmoil, environmental deterioration and food security. In the centre of all these roadblocks is agriculture which occupies a prominent place. None of the humanitarian goals is more important than feeding the world’s growing population. Because natural resources are already depleting due to population growth and rising living standards has brought agriculture in under constant pressure to expand and intensify production for various economic fronts. While governments and bilateral agencies around the world are devoting significant resources to increasing agricultural yield, less emphasis is placed on making agriculture environmentally sustainable. Agriculture is the primary source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), accounting for 20–25% of total global emissions from food, feed and biofuel production, as well as agriculture-driven land use changes. Nonetheless, the green revolution has greatly increased food production while jeopardizing the environmental integrity of agroecosystems and threatening age-old traditional agricultural practices. As a result, developing a climate-smart agriculture (CSA) strategy for sustainable crop cultivation is critical. Traditional agricultural practises are gaining popularity around the world as a result of fluctuations in climatic conditions. The present work examines the relationship between altered environmental conditions and agroeconomic practises in use, and it suggests using traditional agricultural practises as a CSA for crop cultivation in a sustainable manner.
