摘要

There is an imperative need for successful functioning of irrigation resources due to the continuously rising demand for water brought on by population increase and competition from non-agricultural activities. For increased agricultural output, the requisite amount of water must be delivered promptly. Water supply dependability can be increased by operating irrigation canals more efficiently. In many parts of the world, irrigation canal automation is becoming a cognitive strategy in an effort to increase water supply efficiency and operational flexibility. Evidently, even tiny variations in maintaining flows at the proper scheduled values can result in significant water waste, which is crucial in desert regions and during dry seasons. As an alternative to typical manual operations’ poor performance, automatic control methods are already being examined. This chapter addresses the contemporary technologies in the field of irrigation canal automation, as well as the prospects and difficulties for automation in India. It also provides a basic overview of the possible advantages of automation.
