Building Social Capital and Community Integration: A Case Study of Prosperous Garden

In this chapter, taking Prosperous Garden as a case study of urban redevelopment, we investigate and analyze inclusive housing strategies and people-oriented management practices targeting intergenerational harmony, community integration and social wellbeing. Prosperous Garden consists of “mixed social groups” living in different types of housing, such as elderly housing flats, rental housing and sales housing. Our case study highlights the appropriate “inclusive model” in building a cohesive community given the diverse community backgrounds. It demonstrates successful “placemaking” in the creation of a distinctive, unique, inclusive and community space through recapitalizing the community spirit, culture and historical assets in the redevelopment project. We argue that placing “corporate social responsibility” (CSR) and inclusive management frameworks at the top of the business agenda in support of the welfare of the local community is the key to building social capital and sustainable business.
