Employment Opportunities and Career Trajectories of Women Dentists in the Private Practice Sector of Kerala, India: An Intersectional Analysis

  • Malu Mohan

摘要

This chapter presents the findings of an intersectional analysis conducted among women dental graduates of Kerala, exploring the gender gaps in employment opportunities and career trajectories in the state’s private dental practice sector. It also discusses the varied demonstrations of these gaps reflected in the experiences of women dentists and examines the implications on their careers. Based on in-depth interviews with 44 women graduates, the chapter examines how gender overlaps with other identities of class, caste, and religion to determine their professional experiences as dentists. There is a crisis in the dental practice sector of the state characterized by poor financial viability of clinical practice and unemployment. The sector is also witnessing a decline in ethical standards and quality of care. Against this backdrop, the chapter identifies three specific barriers which prevent women dentists from advancing their careers: (i) gender norms guiding mobility, time spent away from home, and marriage, (ii) domestic responsibilities, and (iii) gender stereotypes restricting professional opportunities.
