Introduction of Polymers and Polymer Composites: Basic Fundamentals

Due to the rising demand for composite materials that integrate the advantages of both components, material science has increased in both popularity and utilization. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in interest in modifying the structural characteristics of materials on a nanometre scale. The fundamentals of polymers are deliberated about in this book chapter, with the attention being mainly focused on the properties and application of polymers and polymer composites, as well as on recent developments and the potential for further study of this class of materials and their uses. The fundamental ideas that are frequently used in polymers and polymer composites are addressed. Organic compounds having long chains are known as polymers, which are constructed from numerous nanoscopic molecules commonly known as monomers. Long continuous chains of numerous repeating monomeric units construct polymers which occasionally show cross-linking and branching between the chains. Then, a description of the physical and mechanical characteristics of polymers and polymer composites follows. The production and characterization of polymer composites are highlighted in discussions on reinforced polymer composites, and their usage is given particular significance. In this book chapter, the focus has been on discussions of the various nanofillers used in polymer composites and how they might be modified. Finally, a thorough analysis of current research and patents is provided, gradually highlighting the opportunities for the creation of a variety of polymer nanocomposite materials.
